FOFA (Friends of Oaxacan Folk Art) Honorary Mention
FOFA “Honorando nuestra raices, explorando nuestros sueños, 2011”
Made with natural clay. Hand-modeled technique decorated with colors of natural earthen substances, and cooked in a wood-fired oven.
Vilma was inspired to create this piece by the Oaxacan dance festival Guelaguetza, in which Oaxaca´s villages come together in their traditional dress. She researched and faithfully reproduced all the different costumes and accessories. She uses a woman´s skirt as a background to show these details in miniature, adding the festival elements of a basket and church. Although the viewer may not be familiar with the festival, Vilma hopes that her piece enables everyone to imagine the Guelaguetza dancers coming together with music and a lively spirit.
