FOFA (Friends of Oaxacan Folk Art) Honorary Mention

FOFA “Honorando nuestra raices, explorando nuestros sueños, 2016”

Made with natural clay. Hand-modeled technique decorated with colors of natural earthen substances, and cooked in a wood-fired oven.

One side of Vilma´s two-faceted terracotta piece portrays Tonatzin, the ancient mother deity representing the Virgin of Guadalupe. At her feet is a jaguar signifying the earth and a rabbit signifying the eclipsed moon. Corn is the beginning of life, skulls are death that is ever-present in life, and stars convey the cosmos. The reverse side is devoted to the creation myth of Aztec and other Nahua peoples. Four “suns” (gods), cycles of creation and destruction, preceded the present (fifth) universe. Its survival depended upon nourishing this sun with blood and hearts – the yield of a cosmic war. In the center is the first man created.
