Magdaleno Fabian Melchor

FOFA (Friends of Oaxacan Folk Art) Honorary Mention

FOFA “Honorando nuestra raices, explorando nuestros sueños, 2016”

Made with Copal wood, woodcarving technique gouges, machete and sandpaper.

When he was young, Magdaleno watched as his father assembled components of the figures he carved from wood with nails. Magdaleno has improved upon this technique, carving the entire figure from a single piece of wood. “Oaxacan Farm Woman” portrays the indigenous woman of his pueblo, working in the fields surrounded by animals that live there. In Magdaleno’s home the family forms a team, each person assuming a particular role. He carves wooden sculptures, his wife decoratively paints them, and even his young children are learning how to sand the wood. His dream is to ensure that this tradition is passed on to future generations.
