Oscar Fabian Melchor

FOFA (Friends of Oaxacan Folk Art) Honorary Mention

FOFA “Honorando nuestra raices, explorando nuestros sueños, 2016”

Made with Copal wood, woodcarving technique gouges, machete and sandpaper, decorated with acrylic paintings.

The dragon is Oscar’s favorite animal and – remarkably – this is the first he ever carved. He “saw” this dragon in the piece of wood he chose, and further refined his vision of its amazing tail by surfing the internet. The dragon is painted in the colors of the earth to honor Oscar’s agricultural roots. Since most of his pueblo no longer works the land, he wants his people to reconnect and take better care of the earth. The dragon reflects Oscar’s dreams, and he hopes this one is the first of many to emerge from his imagination.
