FOFA (Friends of Oaxacan Folk Art) Winner Woodcarving

FOFA “Honorando nuestra raices, explorando nuestros sueños, 2016”

Made with Copal wood, woodcarving technique gouges, machete and sandpaper.

Manuel learned the pyramid technique from his father who no longer carves this kind of sculpture. In their Mixe culture, the nahual (protective animal spirit) is very important. Here a nahual can be seen eating a skeleton and a brave man is eating another nahual. The base is made from guanacaste, a protected wood, of which he could only obtain a small amount. The contest’s theme made him think of the Day of the Dead, as well as a technique that his father used in the past. While Manuel wishes to find his own path and to create his style, this

sculpture reflects his roots.
